FUTURE GOALS
MEETING STUDENTS' NEEDS: EMOTIONS, EDUCATION, & EQUITY
INTRODUCTION
My curiosities and passions related to education are heavily influenced by the needs I encounter within my classroom on a frequent basis. Working in a low-income community, students come into my classroom with a broad set of experiences, strengths, and challenges. Three topics that I would like to learn more about are trauma-informed teaching, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, and, more broadly, equitable access to technology and student achievement.
#1: TRAUMA-INFORMED TEACHING
One goal of mine for the future is to learn more about trauma and its impact on young people as they pursue their education. Trauma-informed education is somewhat of a buzzword recently, but I believe if I could access more knowledge related to trauma and education, I could better serve my students. When students come into my classroom with an array of personal traumas, many of which I may never know about, I would like to know how to create a learning community that welcomes them and enables all of my students to be successful.

#2: OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER
For similar reasons as my previous goal, I would like to learn more about Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). I will be the first to admit classroom management is not my strong suit, but I don’t usually have too many issues with anger or outright disrespect. However, I have encountered students recently who I am not sure how to respond to, and it kind of freaks me out, to be honest. I would like to learn how to address ODD within my classroom without making myself more worked up than I need to be.

#3: Technology & Equity IN SCHOOLS
A final goal of mine for the future relates to my classroom teaching and use of technology. I have done research recently regarding equity for students in terms of achievement in school and general quality of instruction and access to technology. Through my research, I became interested in how to best incorporate technology in my classroom which is an English Language Arts classroom in a Title I middle school. I would like to continue to learn more about how best to engage my students who have varying, and often limited, access and exposure to technology when they are outside of my classroom.
