Tech tips for teachers

Whenever I am introduced to a new website or resource that sounds like something that would make my classroom even better, I can't wait to go online and explore the opportunities and materials they present. This is even better when the application, website, or Chrome extension is free!

 

That being said, today I would like to share with you some of my favorite tech tools and resources, starting with web-based tools. I hope you find something new you'd like to try out in your classroom in the links below.

All of the following are Web-Based Tools: Tools readily accessible from a web browser.

Why should you try it?

  • Hundreds of texts and media to explore and assign to students. All texts have related media, anything from videos to paired texts. 

  • You can filter by grade, genre, theme, topic, & more.

  • Useful across content areas, not just English class. 

  • Integrates with Google Classroom.

  • Has advanced guided reading options and accessibility features.

    • Dictionary, audio, highlighted guided-reading, guided reading questions throughout texts, footnotes etc.

  • Like NewsELA.com, it offers similar assessments, however–IT’S ALL FREE!

  • The questions paired with texts are challenging and good practice for standardized test-type questions.

  • Easy to differentiate by class or by individual student

  • Detailed student data is available on the teacher dashboard: whole class, individual, nonfiction vs. fiction texts, etc.

Why should you try it?

  • Free grammar practicing website.

  • Allows educators to search for activities and built activity set based on grade level and skills, for example, Complex Sentences, Coordinating Conjunctions, etc. 

  • Integrates completely with Google Classroom.

  • Students can complete tasks independently or teacher can lead interactive grammar lessons.

  • Offers simple data for teachers to examine by student, concept or class.

  • New grammar diagnostic tool which allows you to assign student-specific grammar practice sets to ALL of your students with one click.

  • Students can complete diagnostic as a pre and post assessment, which would be a great piece of data to monitor student growth.

Why should you try it?

  • Free resources for educators and schools, K-12 focused on four anti-bias domains: identity, diversity, justice, and action.

  • Social justice, anti-bias oriented resource explained in full detail on their website.

  • Countless multimedia resources: texts, videos, images, etc.

  • Allows you to plan entire units or individual lessons through Learning Plan Building tool

    • Provides activities and tasks for every phase of the learning process.
    • Learning plan building tool guides users through the entire planning process from start to finish with multiple filters and options for learning objectives, activities, and assessments.
  • Teaching Tolerance also has a free quarterly publication available to educators 
  • Teaching Tolerance has many film kits available for free to educators. These include films with topics like bullying, the civil rights movement, and Cesar Chavez. Along with this, they provide posters and a CD-ROM with additional resources to supplement the film.
