At Owosso Middle School (OMS) I teach seventh grade English Language Arts (ELA).

There are seven class periods in the school day. As an intervention, all students receive two periods of ELA instruction every day. That being said, I have the same three groups of students for two back-to-back class periods every day.

My classroom and instruction largely relies on a reading and writing workshop format.

Students are able to apply and, if accepted, be enrolled in Peer to Peer as an elective class.

Students enrolled in the Peer to Peer class are referred to as Link Students. Their role as a Links is to attend a class period with a student who has a disability, primarily students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Students complete coursework meant to help them better understand their peers through an online class.

Owosso Middle School is in Owosso, MI, located in eastern Mid-Michigan between Flint and Saginaw. OMS has a student population of approximately 700-800 students in grades 6-8, depending on the year.

Student Body: OMS is a rural, Title I school with roughly 72% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch. Additionally, about 15% of the overall student population receives special education services. The student population's racial makeup is majority white.

ABOUT MY CLASSROOM

OVERVIEW OF ELA CLASS

  • Unit 1: Narrative Fiction - Short story writing focused on realistic fiction.

  • Unit 2: Informational Writing - Companion book creation including three literary essays and a research infographic--all connected to a student-selected novel.

  • Unit 3: Argument Writing - One written argument about children and competitive sports and a second argument of choice.

  • Unit 4: Genius Hour - Also known as 20Time or Passion Projects. Students spend one day each week working on a project of their choice. See a blog post here for project details and my rationale behind it.

  • Unit 5: Poetry - Students will read and write a variety of poetry.

All year long students are expected to engage in independent reading and writing on a regular basis. Because of this, I limit the amount of whole-class novels. We usually read three a year. Recently these have been A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle, Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko, and Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan.
